Can I Sit on the Floor After Knee Replacement?
Is floor sitting possible with an artificial knee? We explain the reality of high-flex knee replacements and safe techniques for sitting on the floor.

This is the #1 question in India.
The answer is: It depends on the implant and your rehab.
Standard vs. High-Flex Knees
- Standard Knee: Safe to bend to 110-120 degrees. Good for chairs and stairs, but not floor sitting.
- High-Flex Knee: Designed to safely bend up to 150 degrees, allowing for squatting and cross-legged sitting.
Dr. Abhijit Kale often uses High-Flex designs for Indian patients.
The Rehab Reality
Having a High-Flex implant is only half the battle. You need:
- Pre-Op Flexibility: If you haven't sat on the floor for 10 years before surgery, you won't do it after.
- Weight Control: Large calves or thighs physically stop the knee from bending fully.
- Practice: It takes months of stretching to achieve full deep flexion safely.
Safe Technique
- Use a small stool or cushion first. Don't go to the floor immediately.
- Use your arms for support when getting up and down.
Takeaway
It is possible, but discuss your expectations clearly with your surgeon. If floor sitting is non-negotiable for you, we plan for it from Day 1.
